Small Steps Create Big Shifts

Listen, we live in a world where instant gratification has become the norm. In so many ways this is so cool. This evolution has allowed us to make huge advancements; there’s no doubting that. However, our brains and nervous systems are working overtime to keep up with the pace at which our society operates. We’re expected to lose 20 pounds in 4 weeks. Bounce back culture permeates the post partum space. Some professional fields are expecting their employees to use AI to increase productivity, even to the point that they are sacrificing their teams’ mental health. We’re depleting our planet’s resources to create more convenience, because it sells.

As we confront all of this, there’s a theme that I think underlines all of it. We have forgotten the wisdom of the Earth. Trees, flowers and butterflies don’t not rush growth. Animals aren’t concerned about their weight. They trust that their body will tell them when they need nourishment, they listen to that instinct, and they are unconcerned with the natural fluctuations throughout the year and their lives. They move through their life phases and the seasons without hesitation around letting go.

All of this is to say, we can shift mindsets and behaviors to be more in alignment with this wisdom. If we can allow self-compassion, rather than shame, to be at the center of our routines… we can really see lasting change. What does this look like in practice? It could mean getting a new (emotional support) water bottle to encourage yourself to drink more water - I did this recently and it totally worked. Instead of expecting yourself to go to the gym 5x a week, can you go for a walk? Rather than comparing yourself to everyone on social media, can you allow your journey to unfold in its own time?
