Make Room for Growth
We all want time to speed up. For our desires to be here, like, yesterday. I get that. In fact, I’ve noticed this is one of my biggest barriers to happiness. I want everything right when I want it. When I reflect on all the things from my past that I wanted sooo badly, but didn’t get, I realize there was a really damn good reason the Universe didn’t give them to me. It wasn’t for me. Nothing that is for you will pass you by.
Sometimes, though, we’re not logistically ready for the growth we’re seeking. If you’re seeking a relationship, do you have room in your closet for another person’s clothes? If you were to wake up tomorrow with a million dollars in your bank account, would you know how to manage that money? If you could buy a house tomorrow, are you ready for the responsibility, cost, and time that’s going to demand?
My point is that often we’re so focused on the big goals that we forget how important the smaller milestones along the way can be. I’m not saying you should avoid dreaming big. Absolutely, dream as big as you can imagine. At the same time, try to keep in mind that every time you succeed at a goal, your brain gets a little rush of dopamine. So why not break your macro goals into micro goals and celebrate each time you achieve one? Disclaimer: I am NOT saying you should continuously move the goal post. That leads to burnout and perfectionist tendencies. Instead, we’re acknowledging our effort at every step to maintain motivation and momentum.
Ask yourself right now: what’s a big goal that you haven’t been making progress towards? Now break that down into steps that will make you ready for when you’re actually at that stage in your life. Take your financial education seriously; find a podcast or a book that will at least get you on the right path. Open that high yield savings account and put $5 towards your house down payment fund. Clean out a drawer, just in case that situation ship turns into something more.
If you’re feeling stagnant, take a look around and do an inventory: what growth am I looking for? What are my big goals? What milestones might I need to meet to get closer to them? AND DON’T FORGET TO CELEBRATE WINS BIG AND SMALL. This is one of my favorite aspects of coaching clients, because I love seeing them achieve their goals. Plus, once you integrate this approach, you get to apply it in every facet of life! Join me for some 1:1 sessions if this sounds like something you could use help with.
